Search and RescueCHC operates the Sikorsky S-92 and the AgustaWestland AW139 for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Interim SAR contract, awarded in December 2005. The five-year contract commenced in July 2007, and is supported by new technology aircraft types. CHC operates two S-92s based at Stornoway (Western Isles), two S-92s based at Sumburgh (Shetland Isles), two AW139s based at Lee-on-Solent (Hampshire), and one AW139 based at Portland (Dorset). The introduction of the S-92 and the AW139 has meant an increase in the coastguard's operating range and speed, so aircraft can arrive ‘on scene’ quicker. The many new technological improvements on the aircraft include: the latest Forward Looking Infra Red (FLIR) and low-light cameras, a ‘Nightsun’ searchlight, a ‘Skyshout’ public address system, and high-speed dual hoists. The helicopters are also equipped with a satellite communications system featuring a flight following tracking facility, which is available to HM Coastguard Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCCs) and the RAF Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre (ARCC). |
